1853-C $5 No Motto PCGS AU55 CAC

An exceptional Charlotte Mint half eagle that displays moderate to deep original, crusty toning. The present example is of a relatively early die state, with flashy luster in the protected areas, and only a hint of the die crack that develops at the lower left serif of the E of FIVE on the reverse. The strike is exceptional for the issue, and the coin faces up a little nicer than the mid-to-late die state PCGS AU55 CAC that sold in April 2022 for $9,600.

Description / 1853-C $5 No Motto PCGS AU55 CAC

1853-C $5 No Motto PCGS AU55 CAC - Minted in Charlotte, North Carolina, this coin is an exceptional example of pre-Civil War, Southern Mint gold. Graded AU55 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and bearing a green CAC seal of quality, this example ticks all of the boxes for the modern collector of U.S. coins.

This particular example is one of 23 coins graded AU55 by PCGS, with merely 29 specimens graded higher, perhaps more importantly, it is one of seven AU55s stickered by CAC, with a mere six examples approved in higher grades.

The Charlotte Mint was established to accommodate the booming Southern gold rush, and was operational for a mere 24-years - because of the overall scarcity of antebellum branch-mint gold coins, pieces such as this one are always in demand.
