1849 $10 Moffat Ten Dol. Kagin-6a PCGS AU50 PQ
A lovely, well-struck example of this California gold rush workhorse. The Kagin-6a is the most available Moffat $10, but by no means does that make it a common coin: we believe that there are only around 50 examples in private hands, and PCGS has only graded seven finer than the present specimen. This example is absolutely original, with deep, coppery toning, and plenty of luster for the assigned grade. Careful examination of the piece reveals a planchet flaw that runs through Liberty's coronet to her eyebrow, which in no way detracts from its visual appeal. This detail, along with a tiny ding beneath star nine, helps to identify it as the Donald E. Bently specimen. No comparable examples of this variety have sold in the last decade; however, a PCGS AU58 recently brought over $100,000 at auction.
