1813 1C Classic Head Sheldon-292 PCGS MS65BN CAC Condition Census #1

Ex-Thomas Hall, Virgil Brand, Ted Naftzger. Condition Census #1 for the Sheldon-292, and unquestionably the most aesthetically appealing example of this challenging date (a single, spotted S-293 is the only other 1813 cent graded MS65). Its smooth, glossy surfaces are devoid of marks, and the coin's strike is excellent for the date and type.

Description / 1813 1C Classic Head Sheldon-292 PCGS MS65BN CAC Condition Census #1

1813 1C Classic Head Sheldon-292, certified by PCGS as MS65BN with CAC approval. This particular specimen stands as Condition Census #1, offering both historical significance and aesthetic beauty.

The 1813 Large Cent boasts the fourth lowest mintage within the Classic Head series. Only two die varieties are known for the date, both of which are considered relatively common in circulated grades; however, the breathtaking preservation and conditional rarity of this piece set it apart.

This specimen boasts unmarked, glossy mahogany surfaces, accentuated by subtle hints of darker brown in the fields - a blend of patina that enhances its rich appearance. Its surfaces are remarkably lustrous and free of any distractions, and would almost certainly yield a higher grade if it were a more common date.

Any Mint State examples of the Classic Head series are scarce, but those in MS-63 and above represent a real challenge to collectors. As of October 2011, this example is one of only two 1813 cents to acheive gem status, and it is the single finest cent of its variety certified by PCGS, NGC, or CAC, with no Red-Brown or Red gems known for the date, and has long been considered Condition Census #1 by EAC graders.
