JOLLY OLD ST. NICHOLAS

Description

This is a pleasing note with one of the most famous vignettes for an obsolete bank note.  This 1857 $20 Color Proof note features a large Durand Type III Santa Claus vignette engraved by George Baldwin of Baldwin, Cousland & Co. The vignette depicts a team of reindeer scurrying across a rooftop with Santa seated in what appears to be a rather undersized sleigh for the Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.  This proof note has been hole punched canceled and certified Very Choice uncirculated by PCGS.  Formerly of the American Bank Note Co. holdings, this is an excellent example of one the “100 Greatest American Currency Notes” extant.
